With the increasing human population and deteriorating environmental conditions, there is an urgent need for breeding crop cultivars to achieve sustainable agricultural development and food security. However, conventional mutation-based and molecular breeding strategies are time-consuming and laborious processes and may not be able to keep pace with the increasing food demand in the future. In recent years, the advent of targeted genome editing technologies, particularly CRISPR/Cas, has enabled the targeted modification of traits of interest with unprecedented precision and efficiency, ushering in a new era of crop improvement.
Genome editing technology has made significant developments and advances in plants. However, the application of genome editing for genetic improvement is still very limited in many crops. The goal of this research topic is to present the technological progress and application of genome editing in crops.
We welcome submissions of different types of manuscripts including original research papers, reviews, and methods, including but not limited to:
• Optimization of CRISPR/Cas systems in crops
• Applications of genome editing in crops
• Crop improvement using genome editing
Disclaimer: We welcome submissions of different types of related manuscripts, but descriptive studies lacking significant biological advances would be rejected without peer review.
