Two of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders are Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In trying to better understand these disorders, research has so far almost exclusively focused on the deficits associated with the disorders. This is not surprising, as these disorders can be very debilitating, and individuals with these disorders are often impaired in many domains and circumstances. Unfortunately, knowledge about the deficits of neurodevelopmental disorders is plateauing, while the field has not yet been able to improve the lives of diagnosed individuals, beyond symptomatic treatment. Therefore, there is a great need to address novel aspects in the research of neurodevelopmental disorders in order to get a more complete and balanced picture of for example ADHD and ASD.
Concentrating on potential strengths in addition to deficits in neurodevelopmental disorders generates new knowledge and has the potential to change the prospects of affected individuals for the better. We anticipate that the identification of these missing aspects will change the way of approaching such disorders. It will have an impact on coping with the disorder and will provide new perspectives for healthcare, supporting improved quality of life.
Unfortunately science is lagging behind on this subject and therefore we are initiating this research topic to boost the field with new knowledge about strengths, positive aspects and resilience factors associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. The internet is full of the superpowers of ADHD and the awesomeness of ASD, but science needs to provide solid evidence for this so we can built on this evidence for implications in health care.
This Research Topic should cover Original Research or Reviews on positive aspects, strengths or other characteristics that have a positive influence on daily life aspects or increase quality of life in of those with neurodevelopmental disorders. The subtopics include, but are not limited to
-Positive psychology/psychiatry
-Identification of positive aspects/strengths of neurodevelopmental disorders or traits associated with neurodevelopmental disorders
-Creativity, as one of the strengths that is most often linked with various psychiatric disorders
