Sleep disorders and neuropsychiatric illness are interrelated. Sleep disorders are not only a phenotypic feature to many neuropsychiatric illnesses, but also being a trigger for them. Recently, in spite of evidence in neuroscience that has demonstrated the associations between neuronal activity and sleep/wake control, a comprehensive characterization of interaction between neuropsychiatric illness and sleep disorders is still absent and the specific mechanisms underlying these relationships are not yet clear.

The aim of this Research Topic is to gather a comprehensive body of research to explore the various relationships between neuropsychiatric illness and sleep disorders. This Research Topic would enhance the understanding of the multidimensional relationship between sleep disoders and neuropsychiatric illness. Ultimately, knowledge provided by this Research Topic will help clinical practices for both neuropsychiatric illness and sleep disorders.

Potential topics of interests include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Prevalence or characteristics of sleep disorders and neuropsychiatric illness.
• Psychological and biological mechanism of interaction of neuropsychiatric illness and sleep disorders.
• Role of sleep in development of neuropsychiatric illness.
• Influence of sleep disorders on emotion or cognition in neuropsychiatric illness.
• The socio-cultural aspects of the association between sleep and neuropsychiatric illness.
• Special characteristics of neuropsychiatric illness.
• Special characteristics of neuropsychiatric illness associated insomnia or hypersomnia.
• Psychological and biological mechanism of comorbid sleep disorders in neuropsychiatric illness.
• Primary sleep disorders (e.g., sleep apnea) and neuropsychiatric illness.
• The relationship between sleep-wake circadian cycle and neuropsychiatric illness.
• Treatment of comorbid sleep disorders in neuropsychiatric illness.
• Treatment of neuropsychological symptoms in neuropsychiatric illness, and its effects on sleep disorder.
