People suffering from mental disorders have a mean shorter life expectancy, mainly due to non-communicable diseases, often related to an unhealthy lifestyle. In this context, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases play a major role in affecting health, functioning and quality of life of people with mental illnesses.
The complex interactions between mental symptoms, unhealthy behaviors, medication side effects and cardio-metabolic conditions is even more problematic when considering that people with mental illnesses often have limited access to health care, thus complicating the implementation of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach for individuals with mental disorders and cardio-metabolic conditions.
The aims of this Research Topic are to collect knowledge regarding cardio-metabolic problems in psychiatric patients, taking into account different perspectives, in order to disentangle the biological mechanisms underlying the strict relationship between the two conditions, and proposing novel and integrated approaches to the problem.
