About this Research Topic
Technologies for virtual experiences will never feel real unless they address a plethora of human senses that go beyond vision. Today researchers and industry working on AR/VR heavily explores electrical approaches to stimulating the user’s senses. These electrical stimulators hold great promise in actuating the user’s sensory receptors, allowing to re-create the sense of touch (electrotactile and electroadhesion), movement (electrical muscle stimulation), olfactory (bulb stimulation), gustatory (tongue stimulation), self-motion (vestibular stimulation) and even modulating brain responses (transcutaneous electrical stimulation and transcranial magnetic stimulation). This promise comes from the fact that these technologies can be heavily miniaturized and allow for human-computer integration, rather than just merely interaction. As such, in this Research Topic, we invite all types of electrical stimulation, bio-feedback, and electrical sensing for VR/AR.
We therefore welcome submissions of Original Research and Reviews on the following (but not limited to) topics:
- Innovative electrical stimulation-based technology to enhance AR/VR experience;
- How electrical stimulation (i.e., electrotactile, electrical muscle stimulation, bulb stimulation, tongue stimulation and vestibular stimulation) may help in increasing embodiment and immersion in VR;
- Using electrical stimulation-based sensory augmentation to reach multimodal AR/VR experience;
- Sham controlled studies on the psychophysiological effects of electrical stimulation in AR/VR.
- Novel electrical stimulation technique (i.e., wave form, electrode configuration, stimulation device) to induce and modify sensation.
