The Tibetan Plateau is the highest and largest plateau on Earth, with an average elevation exceeding 4,500 meters. The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau is one of the most significant global geological events during the Cenozoic, and thus provides a natural laboratory for testing and validating major hypotheses regarding continental convergence, global change and the interaction between them.
Tibetan Plateau uplift has not only played an extremely important role in Cenozoic climatic evolution but has also significant effects on the Asian environment. These effects involve global circulation and the inland aridification of Asia, the evolution of the Asian monsoon, vegetation and fauna, and the cultural evolution and social development of humans.
The profound impact of the Tibetan Plateau uplift has inspired scholars worldwide to investigate its many facets over the past several decades. In recent years, the large-scale comprehensive scientific investigation of the Tibetan Plateau with new technologies and novel methods by multidisciplinary research groups has brought exciting new perspectives. New findings have aided progress in our understanding of the history of Tibetan Plateau uplift, including the driving mechanisms, and how these processes drove regional to global impacts. New challenges have emerged that shift existing knowledge and established paradigms.
With these issues in mind, now is the time to present the current state-of-the-art paleotopography and paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on proxy records and modeling approaches. This Research Topic encourages articles that are topically related to our understanding of how, where and when Tibetan Plateau uplift impacted the regional geomorphology, environment, ecology, weathering, erosion, sediments and mineral resources, as well as its large-scale impact on global climate. In particular, we welcome high-quality contributions focusing on the following topics:
1. Recent advances in chronology constraints for (paleo)reconstructions of all varieties
2. Deformation-uplift history in Tibetan Plateau subregions
3. Quantitative temperature and altitude reconstructions from organic biomarkers and clumped isotopes
