The Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) have long been viewed primarily from the perspective of their undoubted contribution to the productivity of economies and the welfare of populations. Taking that into account, the ICT sector will have to improve energy efficiency and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45% between 2020 and 2030. Furthermore, energy efficiency is seen as one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce carbon emissions and improve the security of energy supplies. Among others, ICTs are transforming our society into a knowledge-driven society and can contribute to the achievement of the climate and energy objectives inherent in the transition to a low carbon society. ICTs have already become widespread and, in many cases, energy efficiency is not the main goal, however, understanding the additional benefits of ICTs for energy efficiency and sustainability will improve uptake at local and regional levels.
This Research Topic examines the role played by ICTs in energy efficiency in order to enhance environmental quality and progress sustainable development. The inclusion of ICTs in energy systems allows for better monitoring, control and management. In terms of universal access to energy, ICTs are transforming business models to provide energy access to millions of people. Likewise, the innovative use of ICTs is already seen in the modernization of electricity networks in the world by improving energy efficiency, cost and deployment of renewable energy sources. In this context, exploring the role played by the ICTs in energy conservation and energy efficiency is important to optimize resource use through shared systems and to improve energy efficiency through smaller devices. Moreover, ICTs can help change behaviour and reduce emissions by scheduling electricity generation as needed. In addition to the foregoing, the environmental impact of ICTs has recently become a concern. Considerable extension of their distribution and difficulties in ensuring the power supply for giant data centres has increased the urgency for global reflection under sustainable development. As well, Green computing, currently very fashionable in business communication, is only a very modest reality in view of the challenges.
