Reproductive efficiency is one of the most influential factors in the productivity and economics of livestock. Generally, fertility traits have low heritability, typically less than 0.05, making it difficult for genetic selection to enhance reproductive traits. Recently, various approaches have been widely applied to screen for genetic variations and metabolic pathways influencing reproductive efficiency. Moreover, high throughput sequencing and candidate gene studies have updated our understanding of the genetic basis of reproductive traits. However, the identification and analysis of specific functional and positional variants, as well as molecular regulatory pathways influencing the reproductive processes, remain unknown.
Further research is needed to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms that impact the reproductive process. The goal of this Research Topic is to present current knowledge about genetic factors as well as state-of-the-art methods to study reproductive traits in livestock.
We welcome submissions of original research papers, reviews, and methods, including (but not limited to) research on the following sub-themes:
1.Methods for studying the genetic influence on reproductive traits
2.High throughput studies related to the evaluation of reproductive traits
3.Epigenetic impacts on transgenerational reproductive traits
4.Gene and genome expression studies related to reproductive traits
5.Candidate gene studies related to reproductive traits
