The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, communication, and automation have been the catalyst for the development of a host of new technologies that allow older users to monitor their own health (via wearables), maintain their independence (semi-autonomous driving), social connections (smart home devices), and compensate for a range of age-related sensory changes (hearing aids, smart glasses, augmented displays, etc). Less well understood is how the design and functionality of these technologies needs to be adapted to improve older users' performance and experience, and how both user experience and reliability help or hinder technology adoption and use by older users.
This research topic seeks original research related to but not limited to the following topics:
• Technology acceptance and adoption by older adults
• Accessibility as it relates to sensory or cognitive impairment in older adults
• Perceptions of automation and use by older users
• Use of technology to maintain autonomy and independence
• User experience challenges for older adults
• User-centered design methods and techniques tailored to the development of products for older adults
• Validation tools or metrics for evaluating the user experience of older adults
• Impact of technologies on real-world performance of older adults
