Foliar nutrition is considered a reliable and fast method for recovering many mineral nutrient deficiencies, specially in stress conditions. Many types of biostimulants could be used alone or in combination with minerals to improve the plant performance further. Nowadays the environmental concerns and residuals on edible product is a matter of awareness that is going to put more limitations on use of synthetic foliar formulations in future. The high price of many commercial formulations and dependence on non-renewable resources are other constrains.
On the other hand the increased interest in sustainable agriculture favors the studies on more environmental friendly organic-based materials which are more readily available. Although many organic-based foliar treatments with complex products like fermented fruits has proved to be effective but the effective ingredients and share of each part in observed response remains unclear. Various organic acids, amino acids, sugars, alcohols, plant growth regulators,macro and micronutrients could exist in orgnaic-based biostimulants, which could affect synergistically or antagonistically on the outcome. Studies working with simpler agents could be beneficial in understanding the possible mode of action of each part. The cumulative information in this area could help to reach a fundamental approach in formulation of foliar sprays based on organic ingredients.
Scope of this topic includes epigenetic regulation of plant responses to the environment by foliar biustimulants and possible effects on plant growth and regulation and improving its adaptability to the surrounding environment. This includes enhanced tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses such as pest and disease, salinity, water-deficiency and heat or cold stress. The effects on quality (including bioactive agents and health promotive effects) and yield parameters is the other aspect of improved adaptability.
