Reactor physics aims to study the interactions between neutrons and matter in nuclear reactors with both analytical and numerical models. With reactor physics modeling, key neutronic information of the reactor core such as the multiplication factor, the neutron flux (fission power) distribution can be obtained. This area has benefited from the development of both the deterministic method and the Monte Carlo method. The deterministic method treats problems with a multi-step approach by combining a variety of neutronic models in judicious ways depending on reactor types and application purposes. The Monte Carlo method serves as a straightforward and accurate approach for modelling neutron movements inside a nuclear reactor. Reactor physics methods are indispensable to understanding the neutronic feature of nuclear reactors, and serves as the foundation for reactor design and analysis.
The past decades have witnessed unprecedented developments in reactor physics methods. These advancements have contributed greatly to the nuclear industry. For an update of the current progress in reactor physics methods, this Research Topic will revisit advanced mathematical and numerical modeling methods applied in the reactor physics field.
