Statin therapy is currently one of the cornerstones of cardiovascular prevention, based on solid evidence about the reduction of major vascular events and vascular mortality in a wide range of individuals. Nevertheless, some uncertainties about its efficacy and safety still remain. We undertook a review of controversial topics on statin therapy with the aim of improving its use in clinical practice.
As the name indicates, this research topic focuses on some controversial issues on statin therapies. These issues include both aspects therapeutical (peripheral arterial disease, stroke, older people, familial hypercholesterolemia, under/overtreatment), potential side effects (intolerance, new-onset diabetes, cancer), and new scenarios and insights (COVID-19, gender perspective, NASH). All these topics share the scarce of specific studies and/or the existence of conflictive results, so this review may help clinicians to improve their knowledge in this field.
Topics Covered:
1) Statin therapy in peripheral arterial disease.
2) Statins in the very old patient. A review.
3) Could be statin therapy useful in patients with COVID-19?
4) Intolerance to statin: myth or reality?
5) Diabetogenic effect of statins: does it matter?
6) Statins and cancer.
7) Statins in Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis.
8) Cerebrovascular disease and statins.
9) Hydrophilic or Lipophilic Statins? Clinical implications.
10) Statins in familial hypercholesterolemia: insights from SAFEHEART study.
11) Undertreatment or overtreatment with statins: where are we?
Statins therapy: a gender perspective.
