An Integrated Energy System (IES) is an intelligent large-scale system, which is able to embrace multiple sources of energy, utilize artificial-intelligence-based technology to obtain users’ demand and make optimal decisions to transmit energy. An IES is primarily composed of an energy conversion unit, an energy supply unit, an energy storage unit and an end-user. The IES is regarded as a crucial carrier for the Energy Internet, meaning it plays an important role in underpinning the development of the Energy Internet. Compared with the conventional power grid, IES successfully modifies the previous mode, in which electricity, thermal energy and cold energy are supplied separately. As long as state-of-the-art cooperative control methods and optimized dispatch schemes are applied to IES appropriately, the comprehensive utilization efficiency of multi-energy can be improved and the costs can be reduced significantly.
However, there are still many challenging problems in IES to be addressed. For IES, a large amount of comprehensive renewable energy will be randomly injected into the power grid, which inflicts a major impact on the frequency stability. How to design a secure control method to guarantee the stability of IES is still an active area of research. In addition, avoidable system uncertainties and complex couplings among multi-energy cause difficulties in modeling and energy management of IES. With the deeper fusion of energy sources and loads in IES, the intermittent injection of renewable energy and random change of loads will lead to the unbalance phenomenon between supply-side and demand-side. To address this issue, it is necessary to employ some accurate generation/load forecasting methods to draw up more reasonable action plans or develop smart distributed storage systems. Furthermore, to improve the benefits and cut out the unnecessary costs of IES, economic dispatch strategies and market mechanism should be considered. Therefore, the current research on IES is still at an early stage and many key points are worth further investigation.
