In recent years, efforts in the context of sustainable agriculture are being carried out throughout the world seeking the compromise between environmental conservation and food security. Innovative environmentally friendly strategies considering aspects of soil and groundwater health and biodiversity conservation are central to this topic. A new generation of products and bioproducts are being developed for agriculture. Research efforts with the use of biotechnology have aimed at improving sustainable agriculture. Natural sources for developing these bioproducts are found from plants such as volatile compounds, soil microorganisms, and biostimulants as phytohormones. This new wave of agricultural products includes bioproducts based on bacteria and fungi, products focused on monoterpenes and other volatile compounds to protect crops from pests and diseases, as well as bioproducts to increase plant production combined with wall materials that confer stability, protection, and control.
This Research Topic will highlight bioproducts offering different plant growth and productivity properties, nutrient profile, plant defense, and protection. We invite manuscripts on the following topics:
• Developing new formulations and products of eco-friendly biopesticides
• Study of formulations of soil microorganisms and other bioactive compound’s found in plants as biostimulants and biofertilizers
• Other formulations associated with the agri-food industry
• Study of new techniques to develop new bioproducts
• Properties of new bioproducts or products to use in the agri-food industry.
With this Research Topic, we aim to provide an international platform for a wide audience of academics, researchers, farmers, and industries to discuss interdisciplinary research and innovative practices for agricultural productivity aiming for long-term sustainability. Particular focus is expected for the development of formulations applied to agri-food, such as biopesticides, biostimulants, and biofertilizers highlighting recent advances in the eco-friendly active compounds for crops, mechanisms of action, controlled release formulations, and field-applied results for helping (or improving) the safety growth of crops. Multidisciplinary approaches can describe the processes, bioactivity, or safety. In this Research Topic, we invite the submission of original research, scientific reports, perspectives and opinion pieces, and review articles that encompass the current status of novel approaches and trends in this field.
