Coronary atherosclerosis and its consequences represent the major cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide. While great progress has been made in understanding the inflammatory processes leading to coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction, translating these findings into clinical practice is still difficult. The focus of the proposed Frontiers Research Topic is therefore on translating basic science into clinical practice. The proposed articles will cover various aspects of cellular immunity such as platelets, monocyte/macrophages, T cells or NK cells. Secondly, they will deal with systematic processes such as diabetes and lipid metabolism. Finally, two of the proposed articles will span the gamut from molecular structures to experimental and clinical imaging of coronary artery disease. The potential authors are all clinicians with an excellent record in basic or clinical science. Thus, while providing excellent basic scientific knowledge, the series is designed with a clear focus on translational aspects of atherosclerosis research.
