Under the COVID-19 pandemic, we have observed dramatic reduction in incidence of various infectious diseases, such as influenza in the southern hemisphere and enteroviral diseases in the northern hemisphere in 2020. Not only infectious diseases but also infection-related or -triggered illnesses or conditions, such as preterm deliveries and Kawasaki disease, have decreased to substantial levels. Non-pharmaceutical preventive measures, including but not limited to, physical distancing, universal masking, and stay-at-home order, may have influenced epidemiological features of infectious diseases and infection-related or -triggered illnesses. It is critical to understand the current epidemiological trends under the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it is also important to predict future epidemiological situation after the pandemic. As a large proportion of young children will remain susceptible to many kinds of pathogens under the current situation, accumulation of susceptible population may lead to large outbreaks of those infectious diseases in the future.
The primary and secondary goals of this Research Topic are to clarify epidemiological changes of various infectious diseases and infection-related or -triggered illnesses under the COVID-19 pandemic and to clarify changes of opportunities of diagnosis and treatment of other medical conditions, medical seeking behaviors (e.g., asthma attack), vaccinations, health check-up, other health promoting activities under the COVID-19 pandemic, and stillbirth/birth rate. The further goal of this Topic is to estimate disease burden due to deterioration or collapse of the medical care system during COVID-19 pandemic. We also aim to predict epidemiological changes of various infectious diseases and infection-related or -triggered illnesses in the post-COVID-19 era by mathematical modeling, since susceptible population will expand under non-pharmaceutical preventive measures.
