Background

Mass spectrometry (MS) is an indispensable tool for analysis of various compounds and has been widely utilized in chemistry, medicine and pharmaceutical research. In the past few decades, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry-based techniques have played a vital role in qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic small molecules and biological molecules such as proteins, peptides, nucleic acids and lipids. As such, they have become one of driving forces of various -omics techniques, including proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and so on. Nowadays, MALDI MS-based techniques are widely utilized in the realm of organic and biomedical analysis to characterize complex compounds and elucidate the underlying biological mechanisms of diseases, screen drugs and discover novel biomarkers.

Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) which is commonly used for the analysis of molecules with large molecular weight plays vital roles in organic and biomedical analysis. MALDI MS-based protein and peptides analysis has achieved great progresses in the past few decades. In recent years, various novel matrices have been developed and successfully used for small molecule analysis, especially the wide application of MALDI-imaging in the studies of drug metabolism, biomarker discovery and so on. In this Research Topic, we would like to attract high-quality manuscripts focusing on novel methodological advances of MALDI-MS techniques in organic and biomedical analysis.

We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on the development of novel strategies on the methodology of MALDI mass-spectrometry based techniques around organic and biomedical analysis. Specific themes may include, but not limited to:
