Shale oil plays as an important component of world energy resources and its production has successively achieved some breakthroughs in the past decade. However, it remains a challenging work to efficiently and accurately assess shale oil reserves and identify sweet spots distribution. Geological evaluation theory and exploration technology of shale oil resources have always been a hot topic in the world in recent years, and various methods have been tested in laboratory and field to explore their potential in getting more useful geological information of shale reservoirs.
Despite the advanced techniques lead to tremendous opportunities for the understanding of shale oil resources, uncertainties such as oil accumulation, storage, mobility as well as reservoir brittleness, etc. associated with shale oil sweet spot should be comprehensively considered to improve efficiency and minimize risks. Many scholars have made outstanding progress in theoretical research and field application of shale oil, to further promote the exploration technologies, we would like to call for a special collection of most recent studies on new advances and challenges in shale oil exploration.
