In the past decade, extensive efforts have been made to understand information processing in the auditory cortex as well as the anatomical layout of auditory cortex. Recent technical innovations, esp. in electrophysiology and imaging, as well as the development of genetic tools, have allowed the study of the functional circuitry underlying auditory cortical function in unprecedented detail. The Frontiers Research Topic will explore the current knowledge of circuit function, neural structure, and mechanisms underlying neural encoding of sound in the auditory cortices. We aim at providing a broad view on current research approaches and understanding of the functional cortical circuits, especially on the microcircuits level. We would like to solicit contributions of original experimental results, specialized reviews, and novel hypothesis and theories on (but not limited to) the following aspects:
1. Functional circuitry in auditory cortex:
a. Synaptic circuits and intra/inter-laminar processing;
b. Cell-type specific functional processing;
c. Circuits and functioning in higher-order cortex.
2. Modulation of auditory cortical circuits
a. Top-down control
b. Neuromodulatory influence
c. Cross modal interaction;
3. Neural circuit-based modeling of auditory cortical function.
a. Micro-circuit models
b. Large-sclae models
4. Development and plasticity of auditory cortical circuits
