Research examining online delivery of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) is in a nascent stage but yields some promising findings. Recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility of delivering online MBIs aimed at the treatment of chronic illnesses, cancer, psychological disorders, and stress. Mindfulness-based interventions may be particularly well-suited to treat the physical and psychological manifestations of chronic stress and related illnesses given that mindfulness training attempts to alter both threat appraisal and coping. Delivering interventions online may be a way to allow more people to benefit from MBIs.
Given the current Covid-19 restrictions that are keeping people in their homes, there is a crucial need for a greater understanding of the most efficacious formats, likely benefits, and obstacles to adherence for online MBIs.
Rates and predictors of adherence have not been systematically investigated in MBIs in general, nor in online delivery in particular. When adherence is reported it tends to be quite variable. A full understanding of who benefits from MBIs is undermined without understanding their reach. This Research Topic aims to address the efficacy of online delivery of MBIs, in terms of benefits and integrity, as well as revealing obstacles and predictors that affect rates of adherence.
This Research Topic encourages empirical articles that address efficacy and adherence issues in online MBIs. Online delivery of MBIs may be especially effective in chronic illness groups, as well as people experiencing stress from Covid-19 restrictions.
Some of the themes that we wish to cover include:
- The development and investigation of outcome measures examining the efficacy of online delivery, with particular emphasis on how to maintain the integrity of MBI in the online environment.
- What are the factors that predict adherence to online MBIs?
-Researchers could examine the online format delivery side - format characteristics such as length of sessions, duration of intervention, interface, level of support from the research team.
- Conversely, from the participant's side personality characteristics, level of distress, illness severity, and trait mindfulness are important characteristics to examine.
