The tooth is an important organ and it develops through sequential and reciprocal interactions between dental epithelium and neural crest-derived mesenchyme. But the mechanism of tooth development is still not entirely understood. Odontoblasts and ameloblasts are two types of tooth specific cells that are responsible for the secretion of dentin and enamel matrices. Impediment of odontoblasts/ameloblasts differentiation leads to abnormities of dental hard tissues formation. Besides, normal mineralization of dental hard tissues is essential for the implement of mastication function. Tooth defect and tooth loss are common clinical diseases, so realizing tooth regeneration is also an urgent task in this society.
In this research topic, we aim to collect the newest advances in tooth development to have a more full understanding of the mechanisms of tooth development. We also would like to know the specific mechanisms of tooth specific cells’ differentiation and whether it can be manipulated through certain chemicals or molecules. Besides, we aim to know how to realize true tooth regeneration or what the limitation is to realize true tooth regeneration.
• Advances in tooth development and regeneration
• The mechanisms of differentiation of tooth specific cell types
• The mechanisms of mineralization of the dental hard matrix
We are interested in original research reports, critical reviews, case reports in the above themes.
