Somatic symptoms are prevalent in psychiatric and mental disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD), general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and somatization disorder. Some are included as criteria for diagnosing MDD. Mounting evidence suggests that somatic symptoms can predict the severity of MDD, and residual somatic symptoms may be predictive of higher recurrence rates in patients with MDD. However, the neuropathology underlying somatic symptoms in psychiatric and mental disorders remains unclear.
Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques provide powerful tools to examine brain structural and functional alterations in patients with psychiatric and mental disorders and related somatic symptoms. This Research Topic calls for manuscript submissions to present knowledge about somatic symptoms and explore neuropathological mechanisms underlying the somatic symptoms of psychiatric and mental disorders. Manuscripts addressing important conceptual and relevant methodological issues are also welcomed. Physician-scientists, clinicians, neuroscientists, and related researchers will benefit from this topic concerning theoretical, experimental and clinical questions related to the nature, origins and functions of somatic symptoms in psychiatric and mental disorders.
