Uveitis refers to a heterogeneous group of intraocular inflammatory diseases of the uvea and adjacent structures, and represents one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. Genetic predisposition, cytokine signatures, T and B cell involvement and environmental factors seem to be involved in its pathogenesis.
Diagnosis of uveitis can be challenging. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to improve identification and management, especially in non-infectious forms of uveitis. Differential diagnosis also depends on distinguishing primary ocular conditions, infectious forms and ‘masquerade’ syndromes (such as malignancies), from systemic inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases (i.e. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), spondyloarthopathies, Behçet’s disease and other vasculitides, multiple sclerosis, and sarcoidosis.
As two researchers interested in uveitis, we propose to gather the world top experts in the field for a new and attractive Research Topic in Frontiers in Medicine, which will include scientific articles covering the spectrum of all aspects of this fascinating and multidisciplinary field.
