The occurrence of corrosion and its practical control is an area of study covering a wide range of scientific knowledge. The corrosion of materials in the oil and gas industry is an important cause of major engineering failures and serious safety accidents. Exploitations of the deep or ultra-deep sea and unconventional oil & gas reservoirs have brought more complex and harsh environments (e.g., ultra-high temperature, high pressure of CO2, and/or H2S). This puts forward higher requirements for the service performance of materials and at the same time makes it difficult for the existing research on corrosion protection technology to meet the corrosion prevention and control needed in the oil and gas industry.
This Research Topic aims to bring together researchers in the field of corrosion and protection to provide readers a comprehensive understanding of recent developments and perspectives in corrosion phenomena and mechanism of materials in both conventional and unconventional oil & gas environments. Concurrently, it also intends to present novel promising technologies and new methods in mitigating the corrosion of materials or enhancing the corrosion resistance of materials for applications in the oil & gas industry.
High-quality Original Research and Review articles in this field are all welcome for submission to this Research Topic. Research interests include but are not limited to the following areas:
- CO2 and H2S corrosion at high temperature and high pressure
- Multiphase flow-induced corrosion
- Environment induced cracking (e.g., stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, and corrosion fatigue cracking)
- Material corrosion in carbon capture, utilization, and storage
- Corrosion-resistant material design and anti-corrosion mechanism
- Surface treatment technology
- New monitoring, evaluation, simulation and prediction methods for corrosion of materials in the oil & gas industry
