Ultrasound imaging has been widely used in assessment of musculoskeletal disorders. In recent years, high-resolution ultrasound has been applied on imaging peripheral nerves. The fascicles and surrounding connective/vascular tissues can be clearly depicted by using ultrasound. The most common application of ultrasound in peripheral nerve diseases is entrapment neuropathy, such as carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes, nerve tumors and nerve traumas.
Use of ultrasound has been proven useful in evaluation of hereditary and inflammatory neuropathy. The ability of ultrasound in evaluation of neuromuscular disease has also been recognized, such as various kind of muscular dystrophy. Furthermore, ultrasound guided intervention significantly improves precision of management and reduces collateral neurovascular damages. Another emerging trend is the application of artificial intelligence on localization of peripheral nerves and discrimination of relevant disorders, both of which facilitate development of precision medicine and diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound imaging.
The goal of this Research Topic is to collect studies using ultrasound for
(1) Diagnosis of entrapment neuropathy of peripheral nerves
(2) Diagnosis of hereditary and inflammatory neuropathy
(3) Diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders
(4) Intervention for entrapment neuropathy of peripheral nerves
(5) Application of artificial intelligence on peripheral nerves
(6) Use of elastography in assessment of peripheral nerves and muscles
(7) Nerve ultrasound in peripheral nerve traumata
(8) Nerve ultrasound in children
(9) The role of ultrasound in the natural history of neuromuscular diseases
(10) The role of ultrasound in predicting treatment response and prognosis in neuromuscular diseases
