Suicide is a complex phenomenon and may be determined by the interaction between various factors such as neurobiology, personal and familiar history, stressful events, socio-cultural environment etc. However, the majority of suicides typically occurs in the context of a psychiatric disorder and/or as a consequence of severe medical diseases. Moreover, the global distressing actual conditions due to economic crisis may contribute further to increase suicidal ideation and/or behaviors.

The purpose of this Research Topic will be to summarize the current knowledge on this complex phenomenon, joining neurobiological, pharmacological and clinical research and everyday clinical practice. Therefore, this Research Topic would be useful not only to researchers, but also to clinicians who routinely visit suicidal patients in clinical settings, in "everyday real-world clinical practice in the context of economic crisis".

We welcome submissions on, but not limited to, the following topics:
• theoretical advances in understanding suicide and suicide attempts
• prevalence studies of suicide and suicide attempts,
• risk factors,
• neurobiological findings and potential biomarkers,
• prevention strategies,
• treatment suggestions.
