The importance of infectious diseases caused by microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites has been increasing in recent years. Infectious diseases may affect global health, as some drugs used in their treatment are outdated and have serious side-effects on humans, making treatment adherence difficult. In some circumstances, there is an emergence of resistance to drugs, as is the case with multi-resistant bacteria. All these factors, which are related to the pharmacology of infectious diseases, clearly affect people’s lives. Aiming at treating infectious diseases, it becomes crucial to pharmacologically characterize active molecules.
By recording the relationship between biological and cultural diversity, ethnopharmacology inspires studies that focus on rich sources of biologically active compounds that can be used for various medicinal purposes. Our Research Topic aims at the discovery of natural products or derived compounds, and the development of new prototypes based on the knowledge from the traditional use of plants, animals, or other organisms in the treatment of infectious diseases, especially considering that no research in this area resulted in efficient new drugs to treat those diseases so far. Also, this Research Topic intends to expand the perspective on how local treatments can provide therapeutic benefits in the context of infectious diseases.
We welcome articles on the following subtopics:
• Ethnopharmacological surveys.
• Infectious disease management and traditional knowledge.
• Neglected diseases and traditional treatments.
• Traditional treatment and viral diseases.
• Traditional treatment and bacterial diseases.
• Traditional treatment and diseases caused by parasites.
• Traditional treatment and mycoses.
