Cardiovascular diseases are always accompanied by autonomic nervous system imbalance. And the key
role of the autonomic nervous system in the development of cardiovascular diseases has been identified,
including arrhythmia, heart failure, hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, etc. Although many studies have
revealed peripheral autonomic nervous mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases, the interactions between
the brain and the heart, which can modulate autonomic outflow, are still unknown. Autonomic
neuromodulation, taking advantage of neural plasticity without destroying the targeted neural tissue, has
emerged as a novel nonpharmacological adjuvant therapy. There are many approaches to modulate
autonomic activity, and a lot of animal and clinical studies have been done to identify their safety and
efficacy. Translational process of neuromodulation strategies will be greatly promoted with the deeper
research of exact stimulus protocol.

the autonomic nervous system (including central and peripheral) on cardiovascular diseases are urgently
needed, which will contribute to the clinical translational process of novel neuromodulation strategies.
We have been involved in autonomic nervous system research for over 10 years, and we are interested in the role of
the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in many cardiovascular diseases, including arrhythmia, heart failure, hypertension,
pulmonary hypertension, etc. The aim of the current Research Topic may include, but are not limited to:
Autonomic mechanisms :
- The interactions between the brain ANS and the cardiac ANS in cardiovascular diseases;
- The interactions among the intestinal ANS, the brain ANS and the cardiac ANS in cardiovascular diseases;
- The interactions among the renal ANS, the brain ANS and the cardiac ANS in cardiovascular diseases;

Autonomic neuromodulation strategies and their translational researches, including low-level cervical vagal
stimulation (LL-VNS), low-level tragus stimulation (LL-TS), carotid baroreceptor activation therapy (BAT), renal
sympathetic denervation(RSD), left cardiac sympathetic denervation (LCSD), spinal cord stimulation (SCS), low- level
electromagnetic field (EMF), neurotoxin injection, and other novel central autonomic neuromodulation strategies etc.
