The prevalence of mental disorders is high among the elderly affected by neurological illness. This complicates the treatment and leads to a poorer quality of life and a higher risk of suicide. Although the relationship between dementia and depression in the elderly has been highly investigated, the comorbidity with other mental disorders, such as anxiety disorder, psychosis, suicide behaviour and somatic disease needs to be explored further. In addition, the pathophysiological mechanisms, epidemiological risk factors and clinical characteristics of mental disorders in the elderly are still unclear. Finally, there is a lack of pharmacological and non-pharmacological studies on mental disorders in elderly patients, especially in those comorbid somatic disease.
The aim of this Research Topic is to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms, epidemiological risk factors and clinical characteristics of mental disorders in old people affected by neurological conditions. Furthermore, we aim to study the novel biomarkers and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for mental disorders in the elderly. In this Research Topic we hope to further understand the relationship between mental disorders and neurological conditions in the elderly, including aspects of clinical, genetic, neuroimage and electrophysiology.
We will consider Original research, Reviews, Clinical Trials and Methods addressing the following topics:
• Prevalence, clinical correlates and associated factors of mental disorders comorbid somatic disease in the elderly;
• The suicide behavior and associated risk factors in the elderly affected by comorbid conditions;
• Pharmacological and non-pharmacological studies on mental disorders in elderly patients, especially those comorbid somatic disease;
• The cognitive deficit in old people affected by mental disorders;
• Novel biomarkers of mental disorders in the elderly (including genetic, neuroimage, electrophysiology etc..);
• The pathophysiological mechanisms of mental disorders in the elderly (using genetic, neuroimage, and electrophysiology etc.).
