Transboundary animal diseases (TADs) such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), African Swine Fever (ASF), Avian Influenza (AI) and similar diseases are considered as highly contagious diseases that impose substantial socioeconomic losses to societies. Sustainable prevention and control measures in endemic and exotic settings are considered as the main objective of many national, regional and international initiatives. Vaccination is an important prevention and control measure in both endemic and exotic settings. However, producing, distributing and using high quality vaccine in sufficient quantity, that is referred to as “vaccine security”, is a major global concern. Addressing global vaccine supply problem given the population growth projection, which is a multifaceted and often complex biological, financial and managerial problem requires expertise from many disciplines to suggest feasible solutions. The European Commission for the Foot-and-Mouth-Disease (EuFMD) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in its current work-plan has started an initiative that is focused on providing insights to various aspects of vaccine security.
Hence, this Research Topic aims to gather latest research and insights from scientists, economists and policy analysts that are targeted at addressing various aspects of TADs vaccine security. Abstracts and articles submitted should feature vaccine security and may focus on empirical studies, methods and techniques, epi-econ modeling and scenario analysis, development of theory, as well as disease impact assessment and control policy analysis.
