It might become difficult to stabilize earth’s climate without achieving Negative Emission futures (by actively removing greenhouse gases in addition to the emission reduction efforts resulting in net negative emissions) and this might lead to a significant increase in climate related disasters. The development of technologies required for achieving Negative Emissions appear increasingly as an unavoidable focus area for the wider scientific and engineering communities. This Research Topic will focus on the recent developments with the Negative Emission Technologies and will attempt to point out the future steps to be taken by the scientists and engineers.
Engineers need to start developing these technologies so that the deployment of these technologies, if needed, is possible within a span of 10 to 20 years. This Research Topic will largely focus on the easier to adapt technologies for achieving Negative Emissions, such as afforestation, biochar, bioenergy with CCS etc. Additionally, all other emerging Negative Emission technologies will also be considered. Both theoretical and experimental studies will be considered. Engineering sciences and technology development will be given importance. System studies also will be included. Using the carbon neutrality efforts emerging worldwide as a steppingstone for implementing Negative Emission technologies will also be touched upon.
We would like to accept manuscripts related to:
• All negative emission technologies (known or emerging technologies),
• Larger programs in which negative emission technologies are employed (for example regional or process carbon neutrality programs in negative emission technologies are employed),
• Basic research related to the emerging technology lines,
• Technology development and demonstration,
• Case studies and scenario studies from different parts of the worlds,
• Techno economics and environmental impact studies,
• Societal aspects.
