The immune system plays a pivotal role in the development and evolution of head and neck cancer. Tumor cells manipulate the immune system through the promotion of immunomodulatory cell types and the recruitment of immunosuppressive mediators. Immunotherapy has become a standard treatment in the recurrent/metastatic setting. A better understanding of the immune system and its effect on the progression and metastasis of head and neck cancer will help the discovery of novel biomarkers for improved selection of patients and the optimization of treatment.
The goal of this Research Topic will be to explore the immunology of head and neck cancer, current immunotherapeutic strategies, strategies to enhance antitumor activity, ongoing clinical trials, immunotherapy combinations, and future directions. We welcome Original Research and Review Articles that cover, but are not limited to, the following list of themes:
The role of the immune system in the progression and metastasis of head and neck cancer
- Strategies to improve immune response in head and neck cancer
- Combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors with radiotherapy and chemotherapy
- Vaccination in head and neck cancer
- Current status of immunotherapy in head and neck cancer
Please note: manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this section and will not be accepted as part of this Research Topic.
