Natural phenolic compounds have acquired increasing attention in last few years due to their countless health-related and neuroprotective potential for therapeutic interventions. Their neuroprotective promoting properties include anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-hypertensive and many others. All of these said properties of phenolic compounds greatly depend upon the number, nature and position of hydroxyl group substitutions on the aromatic ring. Thus, these compounds have the potential to hinder neurodegeneration, reduce neuronal death and improve memory and cognitive function. They are also capable of improving sensory functions, motor performance and electrical conductance by the activation of neurotrophic factors, anti-apoptotic signaling pathway and modulation in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Phenolic compounds exhibit their beneficial roles directly, or through the production of various signaling molecules. The present Research Topic describes various neuroprotective effects and their physiological phenomenon mediated by phenolic compounds to maintain and regulate the general health biomarkers against neurological diseases in both the CNS and PNS.
The goal is to encourage researchers to submit articles that highlight the importance of plant-based polyphenols in order to tackle neurodegenerative disorders. This Research Topic also aim to show how plant-based polyphenols may be helpful in forming a viable solution against neurodegeneration. The short term goals are: the mobilization of international scientists relevant to the field, and the promotion of research in nerve disorders. Furthermore, this collection aims to create an environment where researchers collaborate and share the relevant problems and viable solutions that may enhance the diligence regarding the dietary interventions of neuro-degenerative disorders. In the nutshell, this proposed proposal has merit to contribute significantly in the domain of nerve disorder protection.
