Genitourinary cancers, of which renal cell cancer (RCC), bladder cancer (BCa), and prostate cancer (PCa) are the most prevalent types, are common malignancies with increasing worldwide morbidity in the last two decades. Based on the latest statistics, genitourinary cancers account for about 20% of all malignant tumors in the United States.
Metastases remain one of the major obstacles for the effective treatment of genitourinary cancers, as metastatic malignancies are usually associated with poor patient outcomes. Genitourinary cancer metastases are important targets for both scientists and clinicians to direct the discovery of novel therapeutics. Emerging molecular biomarkers are reported for their ability to predict the progression and development of metastasis.
In recent years, the emergence of novel agents, including molecularly-targeted agents and immune checkpoint inhibitors, has dramatically changed therapeutic options and outcomes of metastatic genitourinary cancers. Investigation for novel molecular signaling mechanisms is the basis for developing therapeutic strategies, as well as for monitoring disease progression.
In this Research Topic, we would like to present the recent advances in the molecular signaling and therapeutic targets for tumor metastasis, as well as their potential clinical applications in genitourinary cancers. The editors hope these articles will provide new and helpful information to readers with interests in basic, translational, and clinical research in the context of genitourinary cancers metastasis. We welcome submissions of Original Research, Review, and Systematic Review articles with a focus on (but not limited to) the following themes:
(1) Identification of novel biomarkers in metastatic/advanced genitourinary cancers;
(2) Role and potential mechanisms of genes, proteins, as well as non-coding RNAs in genitourinary cancer metastases;
(3) Extracellular vesicles in genitourinary tumors metastasis;
(4) Signaling in the tumor microenvironment and their effects on genitourinary tumors metastasis;
(5) Identification and validation of the metastasis and prognostic models for genitourinary cancers.
Prospective authors, please note: Descriptive studies (e.g. gene expression profiles, or transcript, protein, or metabolite levels under particular conditions or in a particular cell type) and studies consisting solely of bioinformatic investigation of publicly available genomic / transcriptomic data are regrettably not within the scope of this Research Topic or specialty section.
