Despite over half a century of research on cardiovascular metabolism, recent years have provided critical new pathways identifying cardiovascular metabolism as a determinant of functional responses in these cells. Adult heart operates under a specialized metabolism designed to support increased energy demands required to pump blood. Nevertheless, injury to the cardiac tissue alters cellular metabolism leading to adverse remodeling of cardiac structure and function. Similar pathways are modified in the vasculature and defining how disease states are similar or different in disease progression.
The focus of this Research Topic would be to provide insight into how metabolic changes regulate cells in the heart and vasculature, such as cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and immune cell function and their implications for cardiovascular disease, repair, and homeostasis.
We are interested in both original research articles and comprehensive reviews about the following subtopics:
- Metabolic changes in cardiac cells after injury;
- Vascular cell response to metabolic alterations in the heart;
- Crosstalk between metabolism and cellular signaling;
- Epigenetics and post-transcriptional gene expression control.
