Growing worldwide ageing populations coupled with expanding internet ubiquity, widespread mobile technology adoption and advances in data analytics and artificial intelligence present unique opportunities for Assisted living technologies. There is a substantial need for new medical technologies to improve quality of life for the elderly, and provide innovative, personalized healthcare.
Medtech, e.g. technology integrating big data, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT), is an area of extensive research growth that has drawn widespread attention. Such innovations result in new devices, sensors, and algorithms, are changing the way healthcare is delivered, and have enormous economic impact on healthcare provision. The assurance that clinical and personal data can be analyzed effectively and securely is fundamental to supporting predictive-based decision-making for intervention, where expert experiences occupy an important position. For example, it usually takes a long time for an expert to label medical images so that they can be used for training or testing a deep learning model. Furthermore, it still remains a challenge to make full use of artificial intelligence whilst reducing the time burden on experts. Extensive research is taking place worldwide in related areas, which in return raises new scientific questions as well as practical issues, such as:
How can the next generation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) be leveraged to provide a better quality of life, particularly for our aging society?
How can we develop AI methods combining data-driven insight and human intelligence to exploit an augmented and self-adaptive learning capability?
How can data-enabled technologies enable both human and machine to work together with trust so as to adapt to each other?
This Research Topic aims to attract original research articles that advance the state of the art in Medtech innovations as well as data science and artificial intelligence. The goal is to provide an opportunity for us to gain a significantly better understanding of the current developments and the future direction of artificial intelligence and data science that will significantly lead the Medtech research, innovation and industry. The topics of interests include, but are not limited to:
• New technologies and frameworks that support the intelligent interaction between human and machine in order for achieving collaborative intelligence;
• Cognitive computing combining Medtech and data-enabled intelligence;
• The design and implementation of personalized Medtech and digital health systems;
• Application of Data Science and artificial intelligence to drive Medtech innovation;
• Intelligent and predictive analytics systems for the early warning, feedback and in-time intervention for personalized healthcare and precision medicine;
• The cutting-edge development of artificial intelligent methods in medical areas.
