About this Research Topic
Cardiovascular research ranging from basic science and translational to clinical investigation has greatly benefited from the integration of engineering principles. Engineering concepts and methods have markedly advanced the fundamental knowledge of cardiovascular pathophysiology and moreover, provided novel diagnostic and therapeutic solutions. For instance, fluid dynamics and solid mechanics prompted the cardiovascular mechanotransduction and biomechanics studies spanning from the molecular scale to the whole human body. Biomedical optics and medical imaging allowed the early detection, prevention, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Integration of material sciences and cardiovascular sciences galvanized the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine efforts to develop biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve cardiovascular functions. Machine learning and medical engineering in areas such as imaging, electrocardiography, and precision medicine can significantly improve cardiovascular outcomes. Nanotechnology and genetic engineering have a great potential to revolutionize future cardiovascular therapies. Cardiovascular engineering is a multidisciplinary field that continues to grow and evolve, holding great promise for better cardiovascular medicine.
This Research Topic aims to present a wide spectrum of cardiovascular research from basic science to translational and clinical investigations which capitalize on engineering principles, methodologies, and technologies. This Research Topic serves as a forum for both review and original articles to advocate the significance of applying engineering principles to gain fundamental knowledge of cardiovascular functions and disease mechanisms. Moreover, this theme issue will highlight the engineering solutions related to the cardiovascular system such as new diagnostic approaches, interventions, and biomedical devices. State-of-the-art engineering strategies such as machine learning, genetic engineering, and nanotechnology in cardiovascular medicine will be further described and discussed.
