Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a complementary technique that was idealized as a tool to precisely localize in the brain regions associated with scalp EEG findings. The classical method evaluates blood oxygenation changes in the fMRI that is temporally correlated to an identified electrocortical event, taking advantages from the high spatial resolution of the MRI and the high temporal resolution of the EEG.
The applications of EEG-fMRI include researches in basic cognitive function and its dynamics, sleep, resting-state networks, neuro-feedback and more, but is especially relevant for epilepsies. Recent studies have proved the value of the EEG-fMRI on the localization of the epileptogenic network and the application of the technique as a complementary tool on pre-surgical evaluation and planning is increasing.
The goal of this Frontiers research topic is to expand the interpretation of EEG-fMRI findings, advancing the methods from the preprocessing to the event detection and analysis. In this sense we aim improve the understanding of the relation between the epileptogenic and the resting state networks, the dynamic of the epileptogenic process across the brain and the application of the newest machine learning methodologies applied on the EEG or fMRI data and the resultant relationship between findings.
