Next generation sequencing technologies have rapidly advanced our understanding of the composition and ecology of the oral microbiome. Maintenance of this oral microbial community is central to good oral health. These technologies have given new insights into how poor oral hygiene and poor diet can lead to dysbiosis in this community and the development of caries and periodontal disease. A full understanding of the composition, functions and stability of this microbiome (including the mycobiome and virome) still requires further research. Application of this knowledge to improve diagnosis and prevent oral disease, for example through probiotic therapy, is still in its infancy.
This topic welcomes any oral microbiome studies, culture or sequenced based, that advance our understanding of the composition or functions of these communities, their role in maintaining oral health and strategies to exploit these data for diagnostic or preventive purposes.
