Despite innovative approaches in the treatment of acute cardiovascular events as well as extensive efforts towards primary prevention, cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Growing evidence demonstrates that inflammatory processes tightly trigger or exacerbate the onset and progression of cardiovascular diseases (atherosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, cardiomyopathy, heart failure). Understanding mechanisms and pathways linking inflammation and cardiovascular diseases will provide a foundation for establishing innovative methods of early diagnosis, prevention, and therapy.
Some cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in cardiovascular inflammation have been uncovered in recent years, and include the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-a, IL-1ß, and IL-6), and mobilization of immune cells (monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, T cells, and B cells). The NF-?B signaling pathway plays a central role in the inflammatory processes of cardiovascular diseases. The MAPK, p38 and JNK pathways also play pivotal roles in different pathophysiologic processes in the heart. Recently, epigenetic signaling and cardiovascular metabolic disorders have been shown to play an important role in cardiovascular inflammation. Despite extensive studies, however, the molecular pathways involved in cardiovascular inflammation are still not completely understood.
This Research Topic aims to highlight the role of inflammatory signaling in cardiovascular diseases, with in-depth studies and investigations on the pathogenesis and anti-inflammation therapy.
Original Research Articles that report new findings in fundamental, basic, or clinical research as well as timely reviews of recent progress in cardiovascular inflammation are welcome. Areas to be covered in this research topic may include, but are not limited to:
