It is well known that chronic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, cancer and so forth, are the major public health issues decreasing life quality and expectancy in the past decades. In that context, the continuous administration of various medicines is required to reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients suffering from those chronic diseases. Unfortunately, many chemically synthesized medical compounds have been reported with serious and inevitable side effects, increasing the risk of other diseases, and reducing tolerance and compliance of patients. Nutrients, the building blocks of life, have shred brand-new light on the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Nutrients originating from natural plants, such as daidzein from soybean and nobiletin from mandarin orange, have been widely studied for their preventive and therapeutic effect against chronic diseases. Compared to chemically synthesized medicines, nutrients show fewer side effects, which conferred their better acceptance by patients. Besides, the application of biocompatible materials, such as different kinds of hydrogels and novel nanomaterials, can enlarge the efficacies of those nutritional intervention against chronic diseases. Therefore, the strategies aforementioned are worth being studied and revealed in-depth for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases as promising complements to the traditional therapeutical strategies.
In this Research Topic, we welcome the submission of communications, research articles, and timely reviews that are related to the preparations, characterizations, processing, and application of nutrients for the intervention against chronic diseases. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
1. Novel synthetic pathways for nutrient production in plants, with potential clinical applications.
2. The influence of nutrition on metabolites synthesized by the intestinal microbiota system in patients with chronic diseases.
3. Novel methods to combine various nutrients to synthesize a beneficial brand-new material.
4. Functional oligomers (such as oligosaccharides, peptides, etc.) produced through biosynthetic methods and the molecular mechanisms with biomedical applications in the case of chronic diseases
