Infectious diseases have always been one of the important factors affecting human health. Rapid and accurate identification of the infectious agents is a prerequisite for effective treatment of infectious disease. However, variety and variability of pathogens, lack of the ability to detect co-infection of multiple pathogens, and high burden of handling large samples have been hampering pathogen identification and infectious disease treatment in hospitals.
Molecular methods and mass spectrometry, with great advantages over traditional methods for its high sensitivity, short turnaround time, and ability to detect multiple pathogens simultaneously, have been widely used in clinical scenarios. For example, in recent years, multiplex PCR and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry have been used in simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens. With the ability to perform microbial identification, bacterial typing, and antibiotic resistance analysis, mass spectrometry has become a weapon for infectious diseases diagnosis. It plays an increasingly important role in formulating accurate treatment plans in time and effectively controlling infectious diseases.
This Research Topic aims to gather Original Research, Research Report, Methods, Mini Review, Perspective and Review focusing on application of mass spectrometry technology in pathogen identification, infection-related proteins detection, bacterial typing, virus typing, antimicrobial resistance prediction, and so on. We would also like to bring discussions on unmet needs in clinical scenarios and possible solutions based on mass spectrometry.
