Mental health problems and disorders are common in fathers during the perinatal period. Elevated prevalence for anxiety and depressive disorders has been found during the prenatal and the postnatal period, in recent studies. There is evidence to support the impact of fathers’ mental disorders on children’s mental health and development, on mothers’ mental health, and on the overall family functioning. Despite the accumulation of evidence suggesting the importance of considering fathers’ mental health, further research is needed to provide better tools for screening and assessment of fathers, as well as to better understand and promote fathers’ mental health and well-being.
In this Research Topic, we invite researchers and professionals of different fields, such as psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work, public health or medicine to submit their proposals addressing the following topics:
• Prevalence of mental health problems and disorders in fathers
• Screening and assessment of perinatal mental health problems and disorders in fathers
• Validated instruments to assess perinatal mental health and well-being in fathers
• Risk factors and protective factors for perinatal mental health and well-being in fathers
• Impact in the father health and social functioning
• Impact on the father’s parenting and co-parenting
• Impact on children’s health and development and associated processes (e.g., father-infant interaction)
• Impact on the mother and the family mental health and well-being
• Biomarkers and psycho-physiological processes involved in mental health problems and disorders in fathers
• Promotion, preventive and remediation interventions on fathers’ mental health and well-being during the perinatal period
Different article types are welcome: Brief Research Report, Case Report, Clinical Trial, Conceptual Analysis, Data Report, Hypothesis and Theory, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Registered Report, Review, and Systematic Review.
We are particularly interested in research that emphasizes the mechanisms and processes involved, explores these questions in a family system background and uses longitudinal designs. Studies from diverse cultural contexts are welcome.
The major purpose and potential contribution of this Research Topic is to share conceptual, scientific and practical essays that can inform health care systems and policies about the best practices in the field.
