Although the field of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) witnessed tremendous progress in the context of discoveries and treatment in the last three decades, CVD remain today the leading cause of death
worldwide with preventive therapy being the most promising approach. The effective interventional and pharmacological methods in improving both diagnosis and prognosis are usually counteracted
with complications that are shifting the field of treatment from therapeutic to supportive. Complications are mainly due to the presence of comorbidities and the absence of clear knowledge on the basics of disease development. Inflammation constitutes a hallmark in CVD development and immunomodulatory approaches are gaining significant interest in managing multiple CVD diseases
including myocardial infarction, heart failure, hypertension, pericarditis, and atherosclerosis.
The main objective of this special issue is to focus on the most promising immunomodulatory approaches whether in the context of pharmacological intervention or in boosting our basic understanding and knowledge by identifying novel targets and mechanisms. All studies pertaining to specific cytokine or chemokine treatment, immune cell adoptive transfers, immune cell or cytokine knockout models, targeted immunosupression, and immune cell/cytokine/chemokine spatiotemporal distribution in the context of myocardial infarction, hypertension, atherosclerosis and heart failure are welcome in this issue. Specials reviews highlighting the most promising findings in this field are welcomed.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
1) Immune therapy (suppression or activation) in preventing or limiting heart failure development following acute (i.e MI, pericarditis) or chronic (i.e. hypertension, DCM) insult.
2) Immune therapy (suppression/activation/engineered) in the context of established models of hypertension, MI, atherosclerosis, heart failure and pericarditis.
3) Models of immune cell knock out (global/targeted) in the context of established models of hypertension, MI, atherosclerosis, heart failure and pericarditis.
4) Immune target identification in the context of hypertension, MI, atherosclerosis, heart failure and pericarditis.
5) Immune cell/cytokine/chemokine spatiotemporal distribution in the context of established models of hypertension, MI, atherosclerosis, heart failure and pericarditis.
