Mitochondria are critical subcellular organelles that have been implicated in nearly every aspect of biology influencing human diseases from myopathies to fatty liver disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. New light continues to be shed on the molecular and biochemical regulation of this ancient organelle, and how these organelles communicate with the rest of the cell and the larger organism for integrating complex biology to maintain homeostasis. These insights have made mitochondria one of the most sought after targets for developing novel therapeutics.
The purpose of this Research Topic is to bring together cutting-edge developments from diverse areas of mitochondrial biology, summarizing the new tools and emerging themes in the field, and the application of these approaches to impact human health. We are primarily interested in original research and review articles focusing on the role of mitochondria in metabolic disease (NAFID, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and others).
