This Research Topic aims to collect selected contributions related to ISPL2020, the 24th International Symposium on Plant Lipids, a web-based symposium organized in Grenoble, France, on July 7th, 2020.

The conference covers all aspects of algal and plant lipid biology and the current Research Topic aims to present the state-of-the-art in this scientific area. Contributions on the following subjects are welcome:

• Fatty acids and membrane glycerolipids
• Lipid trafficking and channeling
• Triacylglycerol metabolism, Lipid droplet biogenesis, and function
• Lipid in development and physiology
• Lipid signaling (oxylipins, phosphoinositides)
• Sphingolipids and sterols
• Surface lipids
• Lipids and environment
• Biodiversity and evolution of lipid metabolism and function
• Carbon partitioning, metabolic engineering, and lipid biotechnology

The ISPL meeting, organized every two years, is a major event in plant and algae lipid science. At each ISPL meeting, the international plant lipid researcher community recognizes the career achievements of a distinguished plant lipid scientist, through the presentation of the Terry Galliard Award. This award is in honor of Terry Galliard who established the ISPL conference back in 1974. The Paul K Stumpf Award is presented to a promising early-career plant lipid researcher. This award honors the landmark contributions of Paul Stumpf to plant lipid biochemistry.

Contributors are welcome to submit Original Research, Methods, and Review articles. Articles related to cyanobacteria, algae, photosynthetic protists, and aquatic plants should be submitted to the Marine and Freshwater Plant section, whereas articles related to land plants should be submitted to the Plant Physiology section.

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
