Mortality rates in people with epilepsy are higher than expected, and epilepsy mortality rates in the United Kingdom, United States and the world are increasing. The causes for this increase in mortality rates are not well defined, however they may include increased reporting, increased prevalence, ineffective treatment of preventable risk factors, or ineffective prevention of epilepsy-specific mortality (e.g. SUDEP).
The aim of this Research Topic is to provide a scholarly forum for original cutting edge research that addresses epilepsy mortality, epilepsy comorbidities, and interventions to reduce the risk of preventable death in people with epilepsy.
For this Research Topic we welcome submissions of manuscripts on, but not limited to, the following topics:
• Original research on the epidemiology of epilepsy, including changes in mortality rates in the US, Europe, and worldwide;
• Cardiovascular and cancer risk recognition and mitigation;
• Leading causes of death in epilepsy;
• Cardiovascular risk of antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy and promise of new AED’s;
• Reductions in mortality from surgical and device interventions for epilepsy;
• Interventions to reduce epilepsy mortality and SUDEP.
We would like to acknowledge that Dr. Luke Allen , University College London, has acted as a coordinator and has contributed to the preparation of the proposal for this Research Topic.
