Current transport infrastructure cannot meet the demands of human activity especially with the rapid recent development of the auto industry. Widespread urbanization has also greatly affected the natural environment resulting in civil engineers exploring new research ideas to come up with solutions to solve the problems that such developments create. One of the main goals is to find replacements for advanced engineering components such as enhanced bituminous materials that still meet the specific requirements of large civil infrastructures. In recent times many novel approaches have emerged as powerful tools in the industry of infrastructure including the cross-scale modeling method, multiscale simulation, advanced characterization method and Artificial Intelligence (AI)/mathematical-based tools which have all been developed to help solve societal problems.
This Research Topic will focus on the recent development or emerging technologies of bituminous materials. This Research Topic will also provide a platform for researchers to communicate and discuss the current challenges in bituminous materials. We invite authors to submit original research articles, as well as review articles, which will contribute to the areas of bituminous materials. Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following:
• The latest research and progress related to bituminous materials
• Advanced simulation and modeling methods of bituminous materials, including finite element method, discrete element method, cross-scale numerical tools
• Application of artificial intelligence or mathematical methods for determining/predicting/analyzing the properties and structure of bituminous materials, as well as big data-based analysis for materials
• The use of recycled asphalt materials for the purpose of environmental protection
