The anatomy of colorectal tumors is complex as they derive from different germ layers. Surgical approaches vary for different tumor sites within the colon and have changed significantly from traditional open surgery to minimally invasive surgery over the last decades. Minimally invasive approaches such as laparoscopic surgery are now routinely used in oncology. However, they have several shortcomings, including the need for specialized high-end medical equipment and training for surgeons to perform the operation. With technological development, surgical equipment has made great progress: robot-assisted laparoscopy offers many advantages over traditional laparoscopy.
In this Research Topic, we would like to share surgical skills, experience, methods, improve surgical efficiency, and promote robotic colon cancer surgery. We welcome Review, Original Research, Methods and Case Report articles focusing but not limited to the following:
1) Advances as well as differences between robot-assisted surgery and traditional surgery (including laparoscopic surgery).
2) Could the robot-assisted surgery better protect the surrounding organizations or sexual function in rectal cancer?
3) Advantages or other differences in patients with high BMI or aged patients.
4) New application of robot-assisted surgery in colon cancer therapy such as complete mesorectal excision and D3 lymph node dissection in different types of colon cancer.
5) The applications of robot-assisted remote surgery.
6) The shortcomings of robot-assisted surgery in colon cancer. How to overcome them?
