Fossil fuel, particularly oil and gas, is the most significant energy source, both past and present, and will continue to be an important component in the portfolio of world energy resources into the foreseeable future. With increasing global energy and environmental demands, the need to explore the conventional and unconventional oil and gas reservoirs with cleaner technologies, both onshore and offshore, is necessary but challenging. The broad diversity of the oil and gas industry creates tremendous opportunities to develop and optimize their recovery technologies, meanwhile, also increasing the complexity of characterization and exploration. Significant technical challenges must be overcome in order to sustainably develop long-term strategies for the petroleum industry. On the other hand, oil and gas explorations must be integrated and optimized for various resources and controlling processes for health and safety reasons, with due regard for the environment and economy. Overall, this Research Topic will focus on themes related to the low-carbon technologies for the petroleum industry, from theory to practice.
The scope of the Research Topic covers themes such as conventional oil/gas recovery with advanced technologies, unconventional gas and oil, heavy oil, oil sands, carbon dioxide mitigation technology during the oil/gas recovery process, and process design and control. Recognising the multidisciplinary and diverse nature of the oil and gas industry, we invite researchers to submit Original Research articles, Reviews, and Perspectives that propose and discuss relevant advanced low-carbon technologies for the petroleum industry.
